About the African Methodist Episcopal Church
The African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church is one of the oldest and most significant African American denominations in the United States. Founded in 1816 by Bishop Richard Allen in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the A.M.E. Church was born out of a desire for African Americans to worship freely and with dignity. The denomination has grown to serve millions of members across the United States and around the world.

Founding & Origins
The A.M.E. Church was founded in 1816 by Richard Allen, who became its first bishop. It grew from the Free African Society and the desire for independent African American worship.
